Beach traffic brought to a standstill as a 10ft elephant seal had the courtesy to cross at a zebra crossing.
A giant elephant seal weighing in at almost a half-ton used road sense to cross a road at a beach resort in Southern Brazil. Determined to see the new land, the seal waddled over a zebra crossing as motorists and shoppers watched in awe. The public took photos and videos as the seal held up traffic for over an hour, providing workers with an excuse to be late for work. Clearly seeing that the urban life was overrated, he retreated back to the Atlantic. Police and firemen were on hand to splash the seal with water so it didn’t dehydrate.
Since male elephant seals can weigh up to four tonnes they were lucky that this one was so small.
